Admiral William H. McRaven UT Commencement Speech
I saw Admiral McRaven on one of the national morning news shows today being interviewed about his recently published book, The Wisdom of the Bullfrog, and was reminded of the commencement speech he made to the 2014 graduating class at the University of Texas. This is a speech that, as a Professor, I would make all of my Coaching Theory classes watch, critique and respond to every year. The directives contained are simple, they speak to and (in my opinion) are intensely relatable, to whomever is subjected to its message.
As leaders its not uncommon to question the impact that we are having on those around us. It can seem as though messages and methodologies miss their mark at times. This speech has often helped me to reset my mind and recognize that the decisions that we make on a daily basis, however seemingly benign, have the potential to greatly impact the lives of the individuals we come into contact with.
Many of you have probably come across this video a time or two over the past number of years, if not, I assure you that it is well worth a few minutes of investment.
“If you want to change the world start singing when you are up to your neck in mud.”—Admiral William H McRaven
